Girls Rock! Phoenix is a non-profit organization made up of local musicians, community organizers, and music enthusiasts.
As stated on their website, their mission is to empower girls through music education, creation, and performance. It offers girls the ability to foster lifelong relationships and connections with peers and mentors in the music industry.
There are a few reasons why this organization is dear to our hearts. Not only do some of the Janets volunteer as mentors during their rock camps, but Girls Rock! Phoenix also played a part in how Thee Bad Janets came to be. Back in March 2019, The X-Offenders and Wild Gift performed a charity event at The Crescent Ballroom. The bands were given the option of which charity they would like to donate the nights proceeds to. Girls Rock! Phoenix was the undisputed choice for all bands involved. It seemed fitting since each of the bands performing that night had strong females that rocked. Plus, the show shared a date with International Women’s Day. What better way to celebrate women than to pay it forward to support our female youth?
It was after this show ended that 2 of our Janets who performed that night started to talk in the green room about music and shared interests. They decided to get together “one day” to brush off their instruments and just get together and play for fun. Not realizing that just 2 weeks later an all female band would be formed….but that is TBJ herstory.
